Finally, I am back online....

My beloved Powerbook G4 from 2005 died after countless trips to home to NY, traveling to and from school, accidental drops and tumbles off of desks and my bed, and an overwhelming amount of song downloads and photo editing, oh well.....

So now I have a MacBook Pro and am anxiously awaiting a version of Photoshop.

A few weeks ago, while I had no computer, and oddly enough I'm going back next week.

I went out with my friend Red from home, I had the best time.

He took me this shop, The Evolution Store, where I fell in love.

For a while I've been focused, visually, on the concept behind Cabinets of Curiosities, or what we now call Museums.

I've looked at the original Cabinets of the 16th century all the way to Ebay the 21st century Cabinet, and nothing was as interactive and creative as The Evolution Store.

A small shop, located on Spring Street in NYC, is a culmination of everything fascinating.

Life, death, animals, humans, skeletons, remains, everything, and all with a price tag.

It's like going to a museum but being able to say "and how much would that be with tax?"

Vegan Rice Pudding Peach Tart

Matt & I made the most delightful tart from the April/May ReadyMade magazine but we changed some things, so here is Matt's recipe:

Vegan Rice Pudding Peach Tart

Crust:

1 bag gingersnap cookies (crushed)

1/4 canola oil

Pudding:

1 cup jasmine rice

2 cans light coconut milk

1/4 cup sugar

cinnamon to taste

Peaches:

3 sliced thinly

1 t canola oil

3 t sugar

10 inch fluted tart pan w/ removable bottom

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Pour rice, coconut milk, & sugar into sauce pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling turn heat to low and let simmer for 15-20 min. until rice is cooked.

2. Crush gingersnaps and mix with canola oil, & spread crust evenly in bottom of greased Tart pan.

3. Pour finished rice pudding into crusted pan and bake for 10 minutes.

4. While baking, slice peaches and caramelize in oil, water, & sugar in saute pan on high heat until soft and yummy.

5. Once the tart is out of the oven allow to cool and cover with caramelized peaches.

Facing the Facts

I've been in denial since August, but to be completely honest I gave up on the garden about halfway through the Summer.

I started real strong and excited to get the seedlings I started in March, in the basement, out into the soil, but with 1 week of rain, followed by another week of rain, on top of days of cloud... I really bailed on the whole thing.

So I got about 200 cherry tomatoes and a couple dozen slicers, some peppers and zucchinis and a half dozen eggplant but thats it.

Last year was just too good.

and today it's snowing.

So it's the end of the season, time to take everything down.

here is my list:

-Squash- they died extremely early this year, thanks to Vine Borers.

From the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture

- Zucchini- produced a lot in the beginning and then died off by Aug.

- Watermelon- produced 2 small unedible melons thanks to the pest problem

-Spaghetti Squash- while pulling the tomatoes I found 1!!!!! It hasn't ripened yet but soon will.

- Tomatoes go (I ended up getting Late Bight, Oct. is better than July...)

Resting in a tree above my garden is this cute little nest belonging to some simple little bird.

It must have recently laid eggs because I went outside yesterday and this little guy was resting on the fence, really close to Sienna, odd for a bird to go right up to a dog.

In the top left is the nest, directly over the garden

Seconds later WHOOSH, this bird swoops down and pecks her. She runs, and WHOOSH, it swoops down, I turn, and smack, he flew right into me.

As of this morning my tomatoes ARE NOT infected with Late Blight.

So many people near me have spotted it, I am getting so nervous.

I pruned off the stems on the lower 4 in. of all my plants and am keeping a look out.

I've been checking daily, for Late Blight, which is sadly heading up the coast.

For those who don't know:

Late Blight is most notably know as the disease that was responsible for the Irish potato famine in the mid-nineteenth century. Only effects potatoes and tomatoes and is caused by the fungus-like oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans. It can infect and destroy the leaves, stems, fruits, and tubers of potato and tomato plants.

OSU Plant Disease Control

Symptoms: Water-soaked spots appear on leaves and stems, enlarge rapidly, and turn brown or black. Under humid conditions, a ring or surface of white mold may appear on the leaf underside at the lesion's edge. In cool, wet weather, blight may advance rapidly and ruin an entire field in a few days. This is according to Oregon State University Pant Disease Control

It is caused by extended periods of leaf wetness, combined with cool to moderate temperatures and lack of sunshine (sounds like NE, hmmm) this combination results in perfect conditions for many crop disease pathogens. The problem is that it seen later on in the summer, not now, and it is been reported in NY & NJ, not good. It is carried by storm winds, which could help it land right smack in New England, our weather and lack of sunshine has created an ideal situation for the plant disease.
